Dunkirk – population was 2,363 at the 2000 census. The area is very fast-growing, with many large estate homes. Considered one the wealthiest places to live inside the Washington, DC metropolitan area, with home prices starting at $500,000. The median house price is currently over $900,000. With a central shopping district and a spacious park located in the heart of town, it is easy to get around. The schools in Dunkirk have been rated as the best in Calvert County and in the top ten in the State. Maryland Route 4 runs thru the middle of the town, making it easy to jump on the highway and be in Washington DC within 30 minutes, Annapolis less than 30 minutes and Baltimore in 45 minutes. The town is located along the Patuxent River, with many homes on the water or waterfront communities, such as “Patuxent Palisades”, “Shore of Calvert” and “Calvert Estates”.
The Dunkirk Park and Recreation has tennis, soccer, lacrosse, football, basketball, baseball, cross country, and the park has a skateboard park. Not far from Dunkirk are the bowling alley, the county pools and a water park.
Calvert County is known for its boating and fishing.
Owings – Owings’ center is just east of the Maryland Route 2 and Maryland Route 260 intersection. The area is considered exurban by the Washington Post. It includes a mix of farmland, single-family detached homes and sub-divisions. Aerial maps show that about 50% of the Owings CDP is wooded. The place center lies on the former Chesapeake Beach Railway line, which was converted to the roadway Maryland Route 260. Route 260 extends from Maryland Route 4 to Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. Owings was a stop on the railway local service. Hall Creek originates in the Owings vicinity, forms about half of the CDPs northern border and winds west until it empties into the Patuxent River. The creek bed cuts a significant valley across the hilly central ridge of the Calvert County peninsula, until it reaches the flood plains of the on the Patuxent’s East banks, where it becomes more marshy. Owings is surrounded by Anne Arundel County to the north and Chesapeake Beach to the South. Owings utilizes the shops and parks in Dunkirk, only 10 minutes from town center. Owings has many neighborhoods on the Patuxent River such as, “Friday’s Creek” and “Lower Marlboro”. Many estate homes have been built in the last 10 years, in neighborhoods surrounded by open space. Owings, Maryland is just 30 minutes from Annapolis, 40 minutes from Washington DC and 45 minutes from Baltimore. The schools in Owings are the best in the State, most being Blue Ribbon Schools. There is a private school, “Cardinal Hickey Academy”. There is a library, dance studios, exercise gym, restaurants, veterinarian, karate studio, auto shops, day care centers and more.
Huntingtown-Is located in the center of Calvert County, with Prince Frederick to the south and Owings to the north. Prince Frederick is the County Seat, so all the restaurants and shops are located there. The community is growing, with many large estate homes in small developments off of Maryland Route 2/4. It has a public high school called Huntingtown High, just 5 years old. A private school, “The Calverton School is located just south of the town center. State-operated commuter buses and private vanpools carry residents to Washington, D.C. Huntingtown’s town center has a local grocer and butcher, bank, post office, antique store, auto repair, dance studio, gas station, day care center. The park is located on the Patuxent River, called Kings Landing Park. It has a community pool, walk trails, tennis courts, conference center, canoeing, boat ramp, fishing and more. Huntigntown is one of the most scenic areas in the Washington DC suburbans.
